The Question
How do I cite an essay my professor copied from the course reader and uploaded to Canvas?
Our Answer
According to the Modern Language Association (MLA), this is how researchers should handle an essay uploaded to a web page:
- List the author of the essay and the essay title.
- List the title of the Web site as the title of the container, not the title of the print book, since you found the essay on the Web site rather than in the book.
- Since your professor uploaded the material, list the professor’s name in the standard “Other contributors” slot.
- Then list the publisher of the Web site (only if different from the Web site’s title), the upload date (if known), and the URL. Here is an example from an MJC course:
Walker, Alice."Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self." Canvas, Uploaded by Johanna Isaacson, Fall 2020, https://modesto.instructure.com/.
