Check out our research guide on primary sources. It should be quite helpful. 

One book that I think will be useful is called American Decades Primary Sources. Click the View eBook link under Find a Copy Online. Once you authenticate in with your W# and date of birth you'll see the book. On the left, enter the term education, select the radio button before "within this volume" and finally click the magnifying glass to the right of your search term.You will see 55 articles about education in the last 110 years in an encyclopedia containing primary sources. I'm sure some of them must be from the 1950's.
